Panchadasi – Chapter 4 by Swami Vidyaranya (1296–1386)
Online classes by Ram Banerjee (Based on the teachings of Swami Paramarthananda)
We are delighted to offer a new series of online classes on Chapter 4 of Panchadasi, one of the most
treasured texts of Advaita Vedanta. Authored by Swami Vidyaranya, a towering figure in Indian
philosophy and scholarship, Panchadasi consists of fifteen chapters, each exploring Vedanta from a
unique lens. The text is revered for its structure, clarity, and the depth with which it unfolds the non-
dual vision of the Upanishads.
Chapter 4 presents a powerful enquiry into the nature of creation—viewed from two distinct
perspectives: that of the individual (jīva) and God (Īśvara). It brings to light how these seemingly
different standpoints ultimately point to the same non-dual reality. Vidyaranya’s lucid writing offers
both clarity and depth, making it a joy to study for both newcomers and experienced students of
Vedanta.
Why study this text?
According to Ram Banerjee, this is one of the most rewarding texts he has ever encountered. It differs from many traditional Vedantic works, which can often be disjointed or repetitive. Panchadasi stands out for its coherent structure, thoughtful progression, and precision of language—making it ideal for students seeking a complete and thorough introduction to the essence of Vedanta. The teachings will be explained in a way that accommodates beginners, with key concepts unpacked and contextualised throughout.
Is it for you? This course is for all serious students of Vedanta—whether you're just beginning your journey or have been studying for years. No prior knowledge is required, although focused attention is essential to fully benefit from the teachings. Ram will interweave foundational teachings to ensure that all students can follow the thread of the text.
